SUMMER YOUTH GARDENING AND LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Urban Sprouts and the Garden for the Environment invite Middle School and High School youth ages 11-17 to join our SUMMER SPROUTS!, Summer Youth Gardening and Leadership Program!

Dates & Time:
June 27th, 2011 - July 9th, 2011

Monday through Friday, 9am to 1pm (lunch included)

Final Day Garden Party:
Saturday July 9th, 2011.

Location:
* The Garden for the Environment is located on the corner of 7th Avenue and Lawton Street in the Inner Sunset;

What Will We Do?
• Work in the garden at the Garden for the Environment
• Harvest, prepare, cook and eat healthy food for lunch every day
• Learn about gardening, cooking, where food comes from, healthy eating, and how to take care of the environment in your community.
• Be creative and make garden art.
• Play games and get to know new people.
• Learn to be a leader in your school and at home – teach others about gardening, healthy food and the environment!
• Celebrate at our Final Day Garden Party on the last day, Saturday July 9th from 11am to 1pm, and invite your friends and family.
• Receive a stipend of $200 upon completion of the program if you attend every day.

What Will We Learn?
* Healthy Eating – how to read food nutrition labels, how to make healthy food choices, and how to LOVE eating fruits and vegetables!
* Environmental Skills – how to grow food and flowers in the garden, how to take care of the environment through gardening, composting, recycling and water conservation!
* Physical Activity – how to stay strong and healthy by working your body in the garden!
* Leadership – learn new skills and become a stronger, more confident leader in your school and community.
* Job Skills - how to get and keep a job - and get paid too! Youth receive a stipend for completion.

Summer Program FAQs

Who can Apply?
Middle school students: if you live in San Francisco and attend an SF public school, you are eligible to participate.
High school students: if you live in San Francisco you can apply to join our Youth Staff as Assistant Garden Educators.

What do I Have to Do?
Show Commitment – Attend program every day
Have a Positive attitude – Be open to try new things, like working in the garden, cooking and tasting new vegetables and other foods
Participate and Be a Leader – participate in garden, cooking and educational workshops, take initiative in garden work tasks and help to lead group games and activities
Show Responsibility & Respect – take care of the garden and show mutual respect for all youth and adults in the program
Share Community – meet new people and make new friends
Learn – learn new skills and knowledge about gardening, cooking, nutrition, and the environment.

Transit:
Accessible by the 43, 44, 6, and 7 buses and N-Judah and J-Church streetcars, and a quick drive via O’Shaughnessy Blvd from the Excelsior district. We will provide a meet-up point in your child’s neighborhood where a high school student will guide all students on the bus route for the first several days of the program.
